Extended cognition and constitution: Re-evaluating the constitutive claim of extended cognition

چکیده

This paper explores several paths by which the extended cognition (EC) thesis may overcome the couplingconstitution fallacy. In so doing, I address a couple of shortcomings in the contemporary literature. First, on the dimension of first-wave EC, I argue that constitutive arguments based on functional parity suffer from either a threat of cognitive bloat or an impasse with respect to determining the correct level of grain in the attribution of causal-functional roles. Second, on the dimension of second-wave EC, I argue that especially the complementarity approach suffers from a similar sort of dilemma as first-wave EC: an inability to justify just what entails the ontological claim of EC over the scaffolding claim of weaker approaches in cognitive science. In this paper I show that two much more promising explanations by which to ground the ontological claim of EC are available, both starting from an exploration of the coordination dynamics between environmental resources and neural resources. On the one hand, I argue that second-wave EC based on cognitive integration, with its focus on bodily manipulations constrained by cognitive norms, is capable of resolving the couplingconstitution fallacy. On the other hand, I argue that the framework of cognitive integration can be supplemented by philosophical accounts of mechanistic explanation, because such accounts enable us to explain the emergence of higher-level cognitive properties due to a system's organization-dependent structure.

Extended cognition and the causal-constitutive fallacy: in search for a diachronic and dynamical conception of constitution

Philosophical accounts of the constitution relation have been explicated in terms of synchronic relations between higherand lower-level entities. Such accounts, I argue, are temporally austere or impoverished, and are consequently unable to make sense of the diachronic and dynamic character of constitution in dynamical systems generally and dynamically extended cognitive processes in particular...

The Dynamically Extended Mind -- A Minimal Modeling Case Study

The extended mind hypothesis has stimulated much interest in cognitive science. However, its core claim, i.e. that the process of cognition can extend beyond the brain via the body and into the environment, has been heavily criticized. A prominent critique of this claim holds that when some part of the world is coupled to a cognitive system this does not necessarily entail that the part is also...

Loops, constitution, and cognitive extension

Spyridon Orestis Palermos This paper focuses on the hypothesis of the extended cognition (HEC), and in particular, on two interrelated objections to it, namely the coupling-constitution fallacy and the cognitive bloat worry. Briefly, if there is no principled way in which we can decide whether a (cognitive) process depends on extra-neural (or extra-organismic) factors in a causal, or constituti...

An extended hesitant group decision-making technique based on the prospect theory for emergency situations

Throughout the present manuscript, we are going to introduce a novel group emergency decision-making technique in which the application of prospect theory explains the psychological behaviour of the decision maker who is affected by the hesitancy and uncertainty of cognition in decision making problems.\Instead of usual aggregation procedure, we implement here a new fusion technique that ...

Cognitive Character Engagement and the Extended Mind in Bahram Tavakkoli’s Wandering in the Fog

The present study has a cognitive approach to empathy and character engagement in cinema. In discussing how through empathy and engagement with real and fictional characters, we extend our minds and enhance our cognitive abilities, the present paper studies Bahram Tavakkoli’s Wandering in the Fog (2010), to show how Andy Clark and David Chalmers’s idea of the extended mind as joined with ...
